Year 7s Take Out the Pennant: IGSSA Cross Country
- June 24, 2021

In the IGSSA Cross Country, each school can enter ten runners per year group. To have a few of your team finish in the top twenty is excellent, but for the Year 7 team, on Friday, they amazed us all with six members of the team finishing in the top 20 and the team taking out the Year 7 pennant. What a start to their IGSSA Cross Country careers! They also took out the All Schools’ Cross Country event earlier in the season, and so have had an outstanding year.

This win set up the whole squad to finish 5th overall, and just 10 points behind 4th, with some solid results in the other year groups. This event, while being an individual run, relies on the whole team of runners to give their best on the day and cross the line in front of as many runners from other schools as possible.
After a virtual event in 2020, the Santa Maria team were ready to race and excited to be back out on the track competing against the seven other IGSSA schools. The race was held at Alderbury Reserve with Years 7 – 9 runners racing over a 3km course and the Years 10 – 12 runners covering 4km.

Special congratulations to Niamh Jones and Chloe Dartnall who were 2nd and 3rd, respectively, in the Year 7 race.
Head Coach, Jacinta O’Connor, was particularly impressed with the efforts of all the Santa Maria runners at the event and congratulated the team on their work ethic at training throughout the season.
With the cross country season completed, the squad now turn their attention to the upcoming athletics events and preparing for the Interhouse Athletics Carnival in Term 3.
