2022 Recognising Our Award Winners Years 7 – 11

Our Years 7 – 11 students were recognised for their hard work, dedication and excellence at the annual awards ceremony on Monday night. The girls were acknowledged in front of an audience of their families, teachers and peers.

Jennifer Oaten spoke to the girls and their families about the importance of having a voice. She spoke about Malala Yousafzai and what she’s had to overcome to become the world’s youngest Nobel Peace Prize recipient at just 17.

Jennifer said, “I hope that every student who graduates from the College will feel empowered to use her voice. Each person here tonight has a voice, a voice that is capable of speaking out and making positive change in the world. People constantly make choices about whether to speak up or remain silent, and they continually weigh the risks and benefits of using their voice.

“I am passionate about girls believing anything is possible. I want each of you to know there are no boundaries, no limitations you just need to believe in yourself.”

Academic Captain Sophia Marra addressed the audience and said, “While we proudly celebrate students’ academic achievements, we also acknowledge that success is not solely expressed as a score or a grade.

“Santa Maria College strives to prepare young Mercy women and empower them to create social change. This does not happen simply by having a fancy website or a value written on the wall. Each day, students grow a little towards this goal, becoming courageous problem solvers, compassionate collaborators and confident critical thinkers. There have been hundreds of opportunities for girls to develop these attributes, both within and outside the classroom, this year. Whether it is through one of the emPOWER projects, a class debate or a dance performance, each day, we learn more and take another step closer to being the changemakers of the future and make a positive impact in our world.
