2023 Music Eisteddfod
Have you ever wondered about the origins of that odd worded eisteddfod? It was originally a music and poetry festival dating back to 1176 Wales. The term eisteddfod, is formed from the Welsh root eistedd, meaning ‘sit’, and fod, meaning ‘be’, which means, according to Hywel Teifi Edwards, ‘sitting-together.’
Instrumental and vocal students performed at the annual Santa Maria College Music Eisteddfod last Sunday 14 August. There were performances from 125 students across seven sessions, with a range from contemporary and jazz styles to Western art classics.
Paul Kinsella, Head of Music said, “It was wonderful to see so many students from Years 5-12 opting to perform on the day and support each other from the audience. There was a real sense of enthusiasm and appreciation for the musical talent on display and the parents and friends who attended were clearly impressed and proud.”
Many of the music tutors came along to support and, in some cases, accompany their students in the performances which was great to see. It gave parents a chance to chat with them informally regarding their daughter’s musical progress.
A very big thank you to the Music Department, Paul Kinsella, Jessica Del Borrello and Michelle Hunt for their tireless work and ensuring all went smoothly on the day. Also, to Music Captain, Lucy Dal Molin for her assistance throughout the day.
Finally, a big thanks to the students who supported the event and worked so hard to prepare for the performances, you all did a wonderful job!
