A Burst of Creativity: Students Transform Year 12 Alfresco

Visual Arts Captain, Olivia

At Santa Maria College, we believe in the power of student-led initiatives to transform our campus and inspire our community. Recently, our Year 12 alfresco space was given a vibrant makeover, thanks to the creative vision and leadership of Year 12 Visual Art Captain, Olivia.

Olivia’s journey began with a bold proposal featuring several dynamic design ideas. With enthusiasm and confidence, she presented her vision to Principal Jennifer Oaten. Recognising the potential of Olivia’s ideas to enhance the campus, Olivia received Mrs Oaten’s full support. With approval in hand, Olivia rallied a team of Visual Art and Design students, along with members of the Student Leadership Council (SLC), to bring her vision to life.

The inspiration for this project stemmed from the SLC’s goal to create a more welcoming and inviting space for the Year 12 alfresco area. Olivia embraced this vision wholeheartedly, designing a fun and expressive mural that would not only brighten the outdoor space but also infuse it with energy and positivity.

Last Sunday, Olivia and her dedicated team set to work, transforming the alfresco space with vibrant orange and bright pink hues. The result is stunning. The mural has breathed new life into the area, creating a lively and inspiring environment that reflects the creativity and spirit of our students.

This project is a testament to the leadership and collaborative spirit fostered at Santa Maria College. Olivia’s initiative, coupled with the support and hard work of her peers, has culminated in a beautiful and functional space that will be cherished by students and staff for years to come.

The transformation of the alfresco area is more than just a visual upgrade, it showcases the importance of student voices in shaping their own environment and highlights the supportive and innovative culture at Santa Maria College.

The new mural is a source of pride for our community. It symbolises the collective effort and creativity of our students and reminds us of the incredible impact that can be achieved when students are given the opportunity to lead and collaborate on projects that matter to them.
