A Night of Questions, Connections and Courage
Friday evening saw a room full of laughter, teamwork and trivia as Santa Maria College and Aquinas College students in Years 7 to 9 gathered for a quiz night that was equal parts fun and friendship.
The idea to revive this event came from Amelia, our Year 12 Academic Captain. Amelia had seen the success of a similar event two years ago and decided it was time to bring it back.
“We wanted to give the younger students a chance to connect and get to know each other before the more formal socials they will have in the future,” Amelia explained. “A quiz night felt like the perfect way to create a fun, relaxed space that encouraged teamwork and a bit of friendly competition.”

The night was held at Aquinas College and began with light-hearted icebreakers that quickly warmed up the room. As the rounds unfolded, students from both schools collaborated in mixed teams, answering questions that ranged from pop culture to general knowledge. It was a brilliant way to build rapport across schools while sharpening a few brains along the way.
Amelia was heavily involved in the behind-the-scenes planning. She wrote the quiz questions, prepared the answers and created the icebreakers. Amelia worked closely with Aquinas to coordinate the evening. Santa Maria College supplied the prizes, and Aquinas took charge of the food. The result was a seamless event that balanced organisation with spontaneity.
“The energy in the room was better than I could have ever hoped for,” Amelia said. “Because the quiz format encouraged people to work together, it helped everyone settle in and get more comfortable as the night went on.”

One of the highlights for Amelia was watching students during the dinner break. “I had been a bit worried that people would just stick with their usual friends, but that was not the case at all. Everyone got up, moved around and chatted with people they had not met before. It was a great moment to witness.”
The quiz night was a showcase of leadership, initiative and collaboration. It also demonstrated the power of simple ideas in building stronger community ties.
“I really hope this night becomes a stepping stone for more joint events between our schools,” Amelia said. “It was awesome to see students from both schools building friendships and working together. Events like this show how valuable it is when schools collaborate, not just through leadership, but also through shared experiences.”
With early planning and clear communication, this student-led initiative delivered a meaningful experience for everyone involved. Most importantly, it gave younger students a gentle introduction to social events in a safe, inclusive and joyful setting.
Santa Maria College is proud to support opportunities that foster both leadership and connection. We look forward to seeing what our future leaders come up with next.
