A Season of Reflection, Renewal, and Action

The season of Lent is a time for reflection, renewal, and service – a chance to deepen our faith and take meaningful action to support those in need. At Santa Maria College, we embrace this season with a commitment to justice, compassion, and service, particularly through Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion.

Ash Wednesday: A Call to Reflection and Renewal

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a sacred 40-day journey of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. During our liturgy, students and staff received ashes in the shape of a cross, a symbol of humility and renewal, reminding us of our responsibility to live with kindness and generosity.

This year, Ash Wednesday holds even greater significance as part of the Jubilee Year, a time of spiritual renewal and reconciliation. Just as Lent calls us to reflect on our actions and seek forgiveness, the Jubilee Year is an opportunity to celebrate God’s mercy and deepen our faith through acts of service and justice.

Yet, Ash Wednesday is more than a moment of personal reflection, it is a call to action. It also marks the launch of Project Compassion, a movement that unites us in solidarity with communities experiencing poverty and injustice.

Lent and Project Compassion: Taking Action Together

The theme for Project Compassion 2025, ‘Unite Against Poverty’, reminds us that faith is lived through action. As a Mercy school, we instil in our students the belief that even the smallest act of kindness, whether through a donation, advocacy, or service, can create real and lasting change.

Each student at Santa Maria College has been asked to donate $10.00 to support Project Compassion. While this may seem like a small amount, it has the power to transform lives.

  • $10.00 could provide seeds to help families in Nepal grow their own food and become self-sufficient.
  • In Bangladesh, $10.00 could support a child’s education, providing essential school supplies.
  • For communities in the Solomon Islands, $10.00 could help deliver clean drinking water.

When our community comes together, our collective efforts can make a significant impact on the lives of those most in need.
