A Space to Create – Welcome to the Makers Studio

Years 5 and 6 Makers Studio Sparks Creativity After School

There is something special about a room full of girls who are busy making. The new Years 5 and 6 Makers Studio, which launched last term, has quickly become a joyful part of the week, giving students a dedicated space to create, experiment, and enjoy the process of bringing ideas to life.

Held every Tuesday from 3.15 pm to 4.15 pm, Makers Studio invites students to dive into hands on crafts, art, and design projects that build both skills and confidence. It is a chance to try something new, get a little messy, and take pride in making something from scratch.

A place to Make, Imagine and Design

At this age, girls are full of ideas. They are curious, creative, and eager to have a go. Makers Studio taps into that energy by giving students the freedom to explore different materials, techniques, and styles each week.

So far, the girls have thrown themselves into a wonderful mix of projects. They have created chalk self portraits full of personality, made cardboard Easter bunnies wrapped in coloured string and holding carrots with pink buttons on their cheeks, and designed floral collages using a range of mixed materials.

They have also explored Monet inspired art with oil pastels, drawing beautiful landscapes while learning how colour and texture can bring a scene to life. Another favourite has been insect art, where students cut out different bugs and decorated them with coloured paper and shapes. Each piece has been different, and that is exactly the point.

What the Girls Are Loving Most

Eliose and Winnie (Year 6) share their favourite things about Makers Studio.

“My favourite activity at Makers Studio was the lily pad art because I loved blending the pastel colours, and it was a great way to unleash my creativity.” Eloise

“Some materials that I enjoyed using were chalk, oil pastels and wool for my most favourite project, the Easter Bunny.” Winnie

A Bright New Addition to Years 5 and 6

Makers Studio has already become a bright spot in the co-curricular program for Years 5 and 6. It reflects the spirit of these early years at Santa Maria so well, giving girls opportunities to explore their interests, try new things, and discover just how capable and imaginative they are.

From chalk portraits to pastel landscapes and paper insects, each Tuesday afternoon has brought a new burst of colour, creativity, and fun. We cannot wait to see what the girls make next.
