Alessia Younas – Passion, Purpose and a Heart for Others
Since graduating from Santa Maria College in 2021, Alessia Younas has been on a mission to support children and families in meaningful ways. With a heart for service and a strong sense of purpose, she is now working in child protection and making a real impact in the lives of others. We caught up with Alessia to hear more about her journey.
What have you been doing since graduating from Santa Maria?
Since graduating in 2021, I’ve completed a Bachelor of Behavioural Science at the University of Notre Dame, which I finished earlier this year. During my studies, I developed a strong interest in child and family wellbeing, which led me to my current role at the Department of Child Protection.
Can you tell us a bit about your work?
Working at the Department of Child Protection, it’s a role that is both vocational and purposeful. My work focuses on supporting children, young people and families who are experiencing complex challenges. It requires empathy, critical thinking and collaboration to ensure that every child has the opportunity to grow up in a safe and nurturing environment. It is a privilege to contribute to meaningful change and to advocate for those who need support the most.
What does a typical work day look like?
Each day brings new challenges and opportunities from engaging directly with children and families to working collaboratively with professionals to ensure the best outcomes for young people. While the work can be demanding, it is also incredibly fulfilling to know that my efforts contribute to creating safer and more stable environments for children.
Have you travelled or explored since finishing school?
Yes! I’ve travelled to Melbourne, Indonesia and Pakistan. Visiting Pakistan was particularly special because my dad is from there. It was a chance to connect with my cultural heritage and reflect on the importance of family, community and resilience. Travel has definitely broadened my perspective, and I’d love to explore more in the future.
Looking back, what stands out from your time at Santa Maria?
Definitely the friendships, art classes and the strong sense of community. I also loved getting involved in volunteering and community service, which really shaped my values and inspired the path I’m on today.
What advice would you give current students?
Engage in everything Santa Maria College has to offer because you can’t get that time back. Utilise it to reach your full potential!
What are you most proud of since leaving school?
I’m proud of the resilience, empathy and perseverance I’ve developed, and of staying true to my goal of contributing positively to others. Finishing my degree and beginning my career in child protection are milestones that reflect that commitment.
And finally, how do you unwind?
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, staying active and travelling when I can. Those moments of connection and adventure help me keep a good balance and bring renewed energy to all areas of my life.
Alessia’s story is a great example of a young woman using her skills and compassion to make a real difference. She has stayed true to her values, and we are proud to see where her journey has led, and where it will take her next.
