Last Friday 19 May, the cross country squad competed in the WA All Schools Cross Country event, held at UWA Sports Park. With the Years 11/12 students doing exams, the College was well represented by the Years 7-10 runners.
The day started off very wet, which meant some challenging conditions early in the day. We must commend the girls on their attitude and positive approach throughout the day, in any conditions.
The WA All Schools Cross Country carnival is an event that includes runners from all over WA, so it is very competitive. The races also serve as selection events for the WA State Team. We had many great results on the day, with a number of girls finishing at the top of their age group and being selected in the State Team or training squad:
14 year old girls
Cleo Kenny (Year 8, Dillon) – 2nd
15 year old girls
Sophie Andrews (Year 10, de la Hoyde) – 6th
Tia Kenny (Year 10, Dillon) – 11th
16 year old girls
Adele Smith (Year 10, Kelly) – 6th
Nikki Martin (Year 10, O’Donnell) – 9th
Brooke Biglin (Year 10, O’Donnell) – 11th
In the team events, Santa Maria finished third in the 15-year-old girls’ category and second in the 16-year-old girls’ category.
Congratulations to Billie Mincham (Year 5, Kelly) and Maya Kenny (Year 6, Dillon) who also raced on the day and finished second and sixth, respectively, confirming their selection in the State Team. We also congratulate all the squad members who competed last Friday, with a number of girls performing strongly and achieving some excellent personal results.
There is now just under a month until the IGSSA event so the squad will continue training hard for that competition!
