It was a privilege for the OGA to be invited to this year’s Senior College Production, Blue Stockings.

Blue Stockings follows the story of four young women fighting for education and self-determination against the larger backdrop of women’s suffrage.

Set in 1896 at Girton College, Cambridge, the first college in Britain to admit women to tertiary education. The Girton girls study ferociously and match their male peers grade for grade. Yet, when the men graduate, the women leave with nothing but the stigma of being a ‘blue stocking’ – an unnatural, educated woman. They are denied degrees and go home unqualified and unmarriageable.

The play follows four determined first-year students over one tumultuous academic year, in their fight to change the future of education and win the right to graduate. But little do they anticipate the hurdles in their way: the distractions of love, the cruelty of the class divide or the strength of the opposition, who will do anything to stop them.

” It was really an amazing performance, don’t know how they learnt all those lines.  It was good to be back at the old school, although so much has changed since we were there, and only the original building was where we spent our years.” Jan Thomas (1959)

“What a great show! Congrats to the cast. We so enjoyed it. Great subject for the girls to consider.” Judy Phillips (Charlesworth 1968)

Congratulations to Amanda Huxtable (1997) on a fabulous production! The students shone throughout their performance. There was a real appreciation for all women who have gone before us, who fought for the freedom we enjoy today.
