Emma Ritchie: All Things Fashion
Emma Ritchie, former student and current staff member at Santa Maria College, talked to our Year 10 Textile students, this week about her experiences within the fashion industry as a young entrepreneur.
After graduating in 2012, Emma studied Fashion Design at South Metropolitan TAFE, gaining skills in the areas of design, construction and pattern making. Whilst studying, Emma also worked for numerous high-end design labels in Western Australia, including Morrison.
In the Summer of 2017, Emma launched her swim and resort wear label, ‘Pretty Pool Swimwear’. Her label has become internationally recognised, receiving orders from Spain, France and Russia.
When discussing life after school, Emma stressed the importance of considering all study options and not just university.
“Students should really contemplate TAFE. Their courses offer good practical opportunities, especially when it comes to Fashion and Design”, stated Emma.
Work placements were also a priority for Emma. “It’s worth putting yourself out there and getting a feel for that environment before diving into study”, she said.
When it comes to pursuing a career in fashion, Emma says to “give it a go” and “not let family and friends deter you from it”.
Emma ended her visit by getting on the sewing machine, demonstrating to students the process of sewing bikini bottoms.
The girls were excited to see Emma put into practice her acquired knowledge and skills.
We thank Emma for visiting our students and sharing her experiences with them.
