Art Encounter Days Inspire Year 11 Students

Our Year 11 Visual Art and Design students were recently treated to two inspiring Art Encounter Days, each offering a unique creative challenge and professional insight into contemporary art practice.

Ariel Katzir

Our Year 11 ATAR Visual Art students worked with artist Ariel Katzir, whose practice challenges traditional notions of beauty. A graduate in fashion and textiles, Ariel celebrates the individuality and complexity found in every face, transforming these ideas into expressive portraits using ink and acrylic on canvas. Her distinctive style combines geometric precision with fluid linework, exploring balance and harmony within the human form.

During the workshop, students experimented with layering a range of materials, each layer placed directly over the last, on large sheets of paper that soon covered the entire floor. This immersive process encouraged them to abandon perfection, take creative risks, and embrace spontaneity in their artmaking.

Minaxi May

Meanwhile, our Year 11 Design students collaborated with Minaxi May, an artist known for repurposing surplus and everyday materials into vibrant abstract sculptures. Inspired by Minaxi’s washi tape weavings and the bold patterns of Vivienne Westwood’s tartan, students created their own woven ‘wash canvases’ exploring ideas of sustainability, reuse, and transformation through design.

Both experiences offered students valuable opportunities to extend their creative thinking, experiment with new techniques, and connect directly with professional artists who are reshaping the boundaries of art and design in contemporary culture.
