Art Encounter Days

Each year, our Visual Arts Learning Area holds two Encounter Days for Year 12 Visual Art and Design students. The Encounter Days give students the chance to work with well-known artists and designers. These workshops give students the opportunity to improve on and extend their skills and speak to artists about their career paths.

The second of these days was held last Sunday. Our Visual Arts students worked with emerging Western Australian artist Matt Wright. They worked with collage to create compositions, which were then translated onto large wooden boards. The boards will be finished in acrylic paints and other media. At the end of the workshop, students were able to engage in art appreciation, reviewing, critiquing and reflecting on their paintings.

The Design students’ workshop was facilitated by Michelle Pike, a well-known Western Australian fashion illustrator. This workshop was a valuable experience for the girls to work with a fashion designer for their current topic ‘Activation’. The girls are designing yoga and activewear and accessories. Michelle spoke to the girls about industry-based fashion illustration techniques, which they then applied to design their own collection. The girls’ designs will be professionally printed onto fabric in Semester 2.
