Year 12 ATAR English students were fortunate to hold a conference call with Margo Lanagan, the author of their study novel, Sea Hearts this week.
Sea Hearts is a fascinating novel. Based around traditional Selkie myths, it traces the development of a community across generations. It is uniquely told from seven different perspectives and is rich in its use of language and voice.
English teacher Rebecca Johnson said “It was an invaluable experience to have access to Margo’s insights, and the students were able to target specific syllabus points through their questions.
Margo graciously addressed questions about her novel and interacted engagingly with students. Some questions formulated by the girls were:
“How does Sea Hearts address issues relevant to our time?”
“Do you think that women are still a marginalised group?”
“Why did you choose to write in the fantasy genre?”
Participation in this discussion will enable students to enhance their preparation of the novel in the lead up to their Mock exams.
