Benefits Of A Healthy Workplace

Massage Therapist Sonja with staff member Yasmin

We all understand the importance of good physical and mental health. Have you ever thought about how important this is in the workplace?

As staff at Santa Maria College, we are fortunate to be provided with various opportunities to look after our health and wellbeing. This week, we celebrated Health Week, which our Physical Education Department coordinates. As well as various student activities, several staff initiatives were on offer. Staff were invited to sign up for a massage, have a skin check done, and participate in a Pilates class.

BENEFITS OF A HEALTHY WORKPLACE

Staff are Less Stressed

We all want to reduce stress in our lives. Many factors bring on stress, and work is one of those. By providing health and wellness initiatives for staff, it helps them to find balance. Encouraging staff to take a break from their busy schedule and participate in wellness activities allows them to regroup and take a break from the rigours of the day. It can also provide valuable tools to use outside the workplace. One of the activities offered to staff this week was a Pilates class. This will now continue for staff after Health Week, each Tuesday after school.

Employees are Happier

Having a positive workplace culture is essential for staff mental and physical wellbeing. Employees who are healthy and supported are happier and more productive. They are more motivated and perform better. We always work better when we are at our best. Staff feel more valued when their physical and mental needs are met. The rate of retention increases, and absenteeism decreases. Happier employees also encourage supportive work relationships with colleagues.

Develops a Positive Company Culture

Employees who enjoy a positive work environment have more job satisfaction and enjoy coming to work. Being known in the community for a positive work culture attracts talented candidates for future positions and creates loyalty amongst current employees. When people feel engaged and supported, they are more likely to stay with an employer.

"Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do."
