Beyond the Finish Line – Reflecting on IGSSA Cross Country

Cross Country season is more than just a race, it is a celebration of commitment, teamwork and personal bests. This year’s IGSSA Cross Country Carnival was the culmination of early mornings, tough training and unwavering determination. Our students brought passion and perseverance to every step of the journey, and the results speak volumes.
Early Starts, Big Hearts
Throughout Term 2, our cross country team showed serious commitment. With 6.30 am arrivals, freezing conditions, and challenging time trials, the girls turned up – and kept turning up. Their hard work was backed by an outstanding team of coaches: Ben and Keely Green, alongside staff coaches Anita Sprigg, Ben Walker Parris Laurie and Dave McKenna. From technique to tenacity, their support made all the difference.
The team also tackled some tough terrain during joint training sessions with CBC at Manning Park, building endurance, confidence and a strong sense of camaraderie.

Carnival Day: Sunshine & Singlets
Race day brought beautiful weather and a real sense of excitement. Our runners looked strong and united in their brand-new red XC singlets – a proud symbol of their season-long effort.
Ben’s energising warm-ups got the girls race-ready, while Anita’s motivational pre-race chats helped each year group feel supported and focused. From start to finish, the energy was high and the spirit unmistakably Santa Maria.
Personal Bests & Stand-Out Performances
While our overall placing (6th) didn’t quite reflect the strength of our efforts, the personal bests and top-20 finishes told a different story.
Here are some of our top performers:
- Year 7: Molly (12th)
- Year 8: Anabella (5th), Isla Blake (9th), Mabel Davidson (19th)
- Year 9: Eva (8th), Amelia (10th)
- Year 10: Olivia l (19th)
- Year 11/12: Chloe (5th)
The Year 8 group were especially impressive, with strong results leading to a well-earned 4th in the pennant.

Looking Ahead
Coaches Anita and Parris are already excited for next year’s season, and so are we! With such a solid foundation and team culture, the future of cross country at Santa Maria is looking fast, focused and full of promise.
