Breathing New Life Into Our Oval

Eco Sisters planting trees

For years, the embankment beside the Santa Maria College oval has been a bit of a wallflower, functional, but not particularly inspiring. That is all about to change!

As part of the works surrounding our new Culture Centre, the College is breathing new life into this space by re-populating it with mature mid–high canopy trees.

A Vision for Renewal

As part of the works surrounding our new Culture Centre, the College is breathing new life into this space by repopulating it with mature mid–high canopy trees.

Alex Chirico, Facilities & Grounds Manager, explains: “This decision is a wonderful step toward creating a natural screen between Cawston Road and the oval, while also providing an inviting environment to encourage the return of our native and endangered Black Cockatoos.”

Service in Action

The Eco Sisters environmental initiative is playing a key role in the project, ensuring the new plantings enhance biodiversity as well as beauty. Their work reflects our College value of Service, responding to the needs of our community and caring for the environment we all share.

What is Coming!

By the end of the year, the area will feature:

  • New reticulation for healthier greenery
  • A limestone retaining wall for structure and safety
  • Fresh mulch and native shrubs to soften the space

Alex adds, “Please watch this space as the transformation unfolds, exciting things are coming!”

A Space for All to Enjoy

Once complete, the embankment will offer shade for students, a sanctuary for wildlife, and a more welcoming view for all who use the oval.

From a tired stretch of ground to a thriving, green hub, this project is a reminder that when we care for our environment, we create spaces that care for us in return.
