Careers Have a New Home at SMC

The newly opened Careers Centre is located in the heart of the College. This ensures all students can access up to date information, book counselling appointments and be part of the guest speaker program.

Maryanne Hughes, Head of Careers, Nic Keskinidis, Career Development Coordinator and Leana Martin are available to assist students in their transition plans. This may include university entrance to local, interstate and overseas universities, TAFE entrance requirements, private registered training organisations information, gap year information and up to date industry information.

Maryanne said, “We want our students to be fully informed about the options for their career pathway, so they make realistic choices about their transition plans. We encourage students to actively research for themselves, using physical resources and our Guest Speaker Program.”

The Guest Speaker Program kicks off this Monday at lunchtime with a speaker talking on entrance to overseas universities, specifically in the UK & USA. There will be two opportunities fortnightly to hear a range of speakers, including speakers on gap year, TAFE, future jobs, and university entrance. These events will either be a Careers Breakfast Club from 7.45 am or at lunchtimes.

The Careers Centre schedules one on one interviews with students to discuss future career plans and pathways, assistance with course selection and information about scholarships, traineeships and apprenticeships.

The Careers Centre staff are also responsible for the Years 11 & 12 ACCESS work placement program and co-ordination of the certificate courses available to students in the ACCESS Program. A Year 10 Careers Expo visit is also a highlight with follow up discussions with students. This is followed by the Year 10 Parent Night, a course information session, attended by representatives from all five universities and TAFE, who are invited to set up displays and are available to answer queries from parents and students.
