Caring for Chicks
Year 10 Biology students have been conducting an investigation to examine how birth order impacts the growth rates of newly born chickens.Â
The investigation involves learning how to care for the chicks, all the way from egg incubation through to adolescence. This involves daily measurements of height and mass, visual recordings, photo and video cataloguing, data logging and more.
During the investigation, key scientific skills are developed such as critical thinking, statistical analysis and an understanding of, and appreciation for, animal ethics.
The girls formed some deep attachments and will be sad to see the chickens go home but have thoroughly enjoyed their time with the hatchlings.
