Celebrating Languages at Santa Maria

The College was a sea of colour, as students dressed up in cultural costumes and decorated the Mercy Walk. Cultural Day is a day dedicated to languages and recognises different cultures; it highlights the importance of multiculturalism throughout Australia and within our own College Community. At Santa Maria College, languages are a vibrant part of our curriculum and students have the opportunity to study French or Italian from Years 5 – 12.

Students took part in a number of fun activities during recess and lunch, including a ‘flip the crepe’ competition, bocce, recreating art masterpieces from around the world and enjoying yummy mini gelato cones – what better way to celebrate different countries and their culture.

Our Year 12 Languages students and staff looked the part, dressing up as a Venetian gondola, macarons, a French mime and even a jar of Nutella.

Various poster competitions encouraging students to reflect on language in their own lives are running until Thursday 9 August, including a photo competition, ‘Languages as a Life Changer’ and ‘Languages in our Landscape’. Entries can be taken to the Languages office or emailed to Ms Quattrini, Head of Languages E: [email protected]
