Celebrating Our Heritage: Mercy Day 2020
- September 23, 2020
Mercy Day is an important annual event in the College calendar. It is the day we celebrate Santa Maria’s Mercy heritage and foundation.

After Mass, students met in their Homerooms to participate in activities that contribute to kindness at the College. Students wrote warm fuzzies to each other and messages of how they will demonstrate kindness on red paper hearts. The hearts were then placed on kindness trees around the College. Kindness posters were displayed in Homerooms to remind students to show thoughtfulness to others on a regular basis.
A highlight of these activities was the ‘Kindness Bingo’, which encouraged the girls to demonstrate kindness in various fun ways. The Sisters enjoyed visiting the Homerooms where they were able to observe the girls participating in these activities.

The Mercy Day Assembly acknowledged the achievements of Year 12 students who received Colours this year. House Captains were invited to the stage as we shared the results of the latest interhouse activities; the Years 5 & 6 cross country, soccer, and public speaking. Finally, the much-anticipated winner of the McAuley Shield was announced. Kelly House took out the honour for 2020.

This year, the assembly also included an acknowledgement of the amazing job our hardworking Grounds and Maintenance Team do throughout the year. They were all called to the front and presented with envelopes filled with lots of thank you notes written by the girls. Finally, the Year 12 students were farewelled as they left the assembly carrying their House flags.

Mercy Day afternoon celebrations took on a different format with the incredibly hard-working Café staff catering for meals offered on the day.
There were many creative fundraising stalls, lots of laughter, and happy faces. One of the highlights of the afternoon was the staff vs student soccer match. The cheerleading and Friday morning dance groups provided half time entertainment.

All proceeds from Mercy Day will be donated to Sr Denise Coughlan to support her work for vulnerable women and children in Cambodia and to Mercy Works Australia.
Thank you to everyone for another hugely successful Mercy Day.
