Celebrating the Next Generation of Leaders
This week, our Year 7 cohort gathered in the College Chapel to celebrate an important milestone – the commissioning of our 2026 Year 7 student leaders.
Led by Dean of Students – Year 7, Kelly Wiggett, the ceremony brought together students, staff and special guests to recognise those who have stepped forward to serve their peers and the wider College community. It was also a moment to acknowledge the courage of all students who put themselves forward for leadership, reflecting the strong sense of initiative and community within the year group.

At Santa Maria College, leadership begins with the everyday. Students were encouraged to think of leadership not as a title, but as a series of small, meaningful actions, choosing kindness, including others, listening with intention and doing the right thing, even when it’s not the easiest path.
A highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of badges by Principal Jennifer Oaten, as each of the newly elected House Leaders was formally recognised. This was followed by a powerful Act of Commitment, where our leaders pledged to use their gifts to support others, model positive behaviour and actively contribute to College life.
Grounded in our Mercy values of Hospitality, Compassion, Justice, Service and Excellence, the ceremony served as a reminder that leadership is about lifting others up and building a strong, connected community.
As our new leaders begin their journey, we look forward to seeing how they grow in confidence, character and purpose. We are proud of the example they are already setting and excited for the positive impact they will make throughout the year. The girls are excited for their first duty next week, running the Year 7 Mother’s Day Liturgy.
Congratulations to our 2026 Year 7 leaders.
