Comet’s Take the Mat at Cheer Con

With glitter in their hair and nerves of steel, Santa Maria’s Comets hit the mat this week ready to give it everything they have. After months of early morning training, team bonding, and mastering stunts that would make your heart skip a beat, our cheerleaders brought their A-game to Cheer Con, one of WA’s biggest school cheerleading events.

Open to students in Years 7 to 12, cheerleading is one of the most dynamic and fast-growing co-curricular programs at Santa Maria College. The team trains once a week, sometimes on campus, sometimes at a specialist gym in Myaree, and it is not for the faint-hearted. These athletes lift, jump, dance, tumble and trust one another to show up and show courage, week in and week out.

Taking it to the Mat

This year, our squad of 27 students performed at key events such as Mercy Day and competed at Aussie Gold at the Perth High Performance Centre, where they placed an impressive third out of eight schools – a massive achievement and testament to their dedication.

And just this past weekend, they were back at it again, this time at Cheer Con, held at the Perth Convention Centre. The competition brought together teams from across the state, showcasing routines packed with strength, synchronicity and school pride.

More Than Just Routines

While the flips and formations are exciting, what really makes this program shine is the confidence and resilience it builds in our girls. Behind every routine is a team that backs each other through nerves and mid-air catches.

One of the most heartwarming moments this year came when an older student took a nervous Year 7 under her wing before her first-ever competition. It was leadership in action, quiet, powerful and unforgettable.

As one of our Year 9 students, Elena, puts it:

“I love cheer because it’s not just about stunts and routines. It’s about teamwork, trust, and becoming close friends with each other.”

Year 7 student Madeline agrees:

“I love cheer because it’s not just about performance, it’s about people coming together to form a team and achieve their goals.”

Onwards and Upwards

The cheerleading program continues to grow, welcoming more students each year who are ready to challenge themselves, form strong friendships and represent the College with pride.

We are incredibly proud of our cheer squad, not just for their competition results, but for the way they show up, lift each other up and lead with confidence.
