Crafting the Perfect Cup

Imagine graduating high school with a professional Barista Course qualification already in hand. At Santa Maria College, we offer this opportunity as part of our Year 10 Food curriculum, equipping students with the skills to craft exceptional coffee and boosting their employability during school and beyond.

This course is more than just learning to make a perfect cup of coffee; it’s about developing a range of valuable skills that are highly sought after by employers. From customer service and communication to attention to detail and organisation, our students gain hands-on experience that will serve them well in any career. Plus, our staff enjoy delicious, student-made coffee during recess, which is a win-win for everyone!

Students dive deep into the art and science of coffee, mastering the espresso machine, exploring different coffee types, and running The Daily Grind, our on-campus café service. The year’s training is complemented by guest speakers from the coffee industry, offering inspiring insights and real-world perspectives that ignite our students’ passion for the craft.

Here are Indiana’s insights.

How has the Barista Course helped you in your current job?

The school barista course has given me the knowledge and, therefore, the confidence needed to make coffee. This has allowed me to gain employment in a busy café. The course also taught me about customer service and communication skills, which have been beneficial in my interactions with customers.

What skills have you found most valuable from doing the Barista Course at SMC?

The barista course has equipped me with the ability to function efficiently in a team and in a fast-paced environment. I participated in the school’s recess café service, where teachers are the customers.

What aspects of the Barista Course do you find most enjoyable and why?

Learning about the different types of coffee and how to properly brew them has been the most enjoyable aspect of the barista course for me. It’s fascinating to see how slight variations in brewing methods can completely change a coffee’s flavour.
