Curtin Geographers visit our Budding Geographers
Jake Schapper, Lecturer in Urban & Regional Planning and Olivia Spriggs and Eleanor Barr, students from the course, recently spoke enthusiastically to some of our Years 10 and 12 Geographers about their enjoyment of their courses and the broader experiences they have had while completing their Geography-related studies. This included field trips and mentoring from experts in the field of planning. They emphasised their broad understanding of the subject, especially their understanding of place and space, which enabled them to specialise in their later studies according to the interests they had developed over many years. Art and dance were mentioned as examples of how different talents might be an advantage in the development of liveable spaces that promote health and wellbeing.
In studying a course that is accredited by the Planning Institute of Australia, the employment prospects are extremely high, with both of our visiting students having secured positions prior to completing their courses.
Some of our students had the following to say:
The talk gave me an insight into the pathways you can take in planning and what jobs are offered. I learnt that the students still studying, already have jobs even though they are still finishing their last year. I think this is a very good sign. Eliza Caughey, Year 10
I really enjoyed learning about what was within the course and finding out how different subjects can connect to Geography. Ellie Suriano Year 10
This talk was great, I was particularly fascinated by how Geography can be linked to almost anything you are interested in. For example, one of the girls is interested in dance and she designs stages and theatres for dance performances. Lola Hooker, Year 10
It was reassuring to know that Geography branches out into so many jobs ranging from the architecture of cities to designing a stage for dancing. The guest speakers also answered all our questions well. I was glad to find out that they had a project of creating cities on the moon and Mars, as I am very interested in space. Zima-Jade Henderson, Year 10
Yesterday’s talk opened my eyes to opportunities that I could have at universities such as immersions, a gap year and degree experience. It was amazing to see how your interests can connect within your degree. Georgia Anderson, Year 12
It provided a new perspective on the interconnections geography has with place and people across the world and even space. Sage Murphy, Year 12
