Dance, Laugh, Repeat – The Year 7 Silent Disco Social
Imagine a room glowing with colour, buzzing with laughter and pulsing with silent beats. That was the scene at Santa Maria College as our Year 7 students came together with students from Aquinas College for their very first social, and what a night it was!
Held on campus, the evening took the form of a silent disco, headphones on, music choices at the ready, and the dance floor waiting. With three channels to choose from, students danced alongside friends… sometimes to completely different tunes!
Year 7 students Ella and Anya shared with a laugh, “It was so funny seeing your friends dancing to something totally different to you!”
That light-hearted chaos is exactly what made the night unforgettable.
Breaking the Ice, One Song at a Time
What stood out most was not just the playlist; it was the people. The energy in the room grew quickly, fuelled by conversation, curiosity and a shared sense of fun.
Students from both schools mingled naturally, bonding over music choices and swapping moves that ranged from impressive to downright hilarious. It was a fantastic way to make new connections in a relaxed, low-pressure setting.
Events like this are about building confidence, emotional intelligence and social adaptability, all key attributes we nurture through our Connecting Learning to Life framework.

A Foundation for Friendship
This event set the tone for what we hope will be lasting friendships and a strong sense of belonging. These experiences are especially important at the start of high school, when students are still finding their place and learning who they are in a new environment.
Our Mercy values of Hospitality and Compassion were alive on the dance floor that night, as students welcomed one another with open hearts and a whole lot of joy.
Just the Beginning
At the halfway mark of Year 7, our students continue to impress with their enthusiasm, courage and sense of community. The silent disco was a celebration of new friendships and growing confidence.
As Anya and Ella shared,
“This was definitely the best event of the year! It was heaps of fun, and if this is what our first social was like, we can’t wait for the next!”
Moments like this remind us that connection does not just happen, it is created through shared experiences, open hearts and a willingness to try something new. And our Year 7s are well and truly rising to the occasion.
