Digital Media and Food Technology Students Collaborate

Year 10 Digital Media and Photography is a course offered in the Technology & Commerce learning area that allows students to channel their creativity and enables collaboration between students.

This term, the Year 10 Digital Media & Photography students have dedicated their time to studying a unit on Food Photography. The girls have taken an in-depth look into the world of Food Photography, focusing on different styles and techniques which include both commercial and editorial styles.

In collaboration with the Home Economics department, the Year 10 Digital Media & Photography students joined forces with the Year 10 Food Technology students last Friday to plan, style and shoot some editorial photographs as part of their Food Photography assessment. The Food Technology students were faced with the task of preparing, cooking and plating food in a sophisticated manner, whilst the Photography students were challenged to think like a pro by setting up their own studio lighting, backdrops and styling props to capture professional-looking photographs.

Food Technology students Alana Clements, Jaimee Langton and Ava Johnson shared some of their thoughts about the experience:

“The collaborative project with the Year 10 Food Technology and Year 10 Media classes was fun and enabled both classes to grasp an idea of the different paths that are available within their passions and interests. The Food students got to practise applying their skills in food design by creating a range of eye-catching dishes, while the Media students had the opportunity to demonstrate their skills in food photography by capturing a snippet of what is done in our Year 10 Foods class.”

As the combined project proved to be a great success, this has paved the way for ongoing collaborative tasks between the Technology & Commerce and Home Economics departments in the future.
