Earth Day 2022: Invest In Our Planet

22 April 2022 marked Earth Day, an annual event celebrated by millions around the globe, dedicated to raising awareness about the various environmental challenges that our planet faces.
The theme for this year was “Invest In Our Planet”, which calls for everybody to do their part – governments, industry, and individuals. It’s all about creating a sustainable green economy through a paradigm shift in the way we do things!
You may ask, what are we as a College doing to invest in our planet? Here are just some of the ways we have made a difference so far this year:
- Our ICT department recycled three full truckloads of cardboard from the new laptop rollout at the beginning of the year. Additionally, all electronic waste from upgrades is currently being sent to a recycling facility.
- Over the Christmas break, our maintenance team acquired selective bins for metal and steel, collecting over twenty cubic metres! All expired and unwanted paints are currently being recycled through the correct facilities.
- 100% of our garden and lawn green waste is now being sent to a compost facility.
- At our café and dining facilities, all plastic containers are being washed and recycled. Not to mention, cardboard is also being flattened and recycled.
But that’s not all.
Behind the scenes, our Eco Sisters co-curricular group, have been working hard with external company WRITE Solutions, to bring to fruition a new waste management system for students. The aim of this new program is to reduce landfill, recycle all paper, cardboard, and plastics, as well as compost all organic materials.
We can’t wait to reveal more about what they have been working on. Stay tuned!
