Why do people leave their homes and start over in a new country? That is the big question our Year 6 students have been exploring this term in English and HASS. To bring their learning to life, they headed to the WA Maritime Museum in Fremantle, where they stepped into the stories of migrants who helped shape the local community. It was a day full of discovery, empathy and a few surprises along the way
The focus of the day was understanding the personal journeys of migrants, why they left their home countries, the challenges they faced, and the contributions they made to Australia. Through artefacts, photographs, and interactive exhibits, students connected with real-life stories that brought history off the page and into the present.
One of the highlights was learning about Giacomo Ianello, an Italian migrant who came to Fremantle as a fisherman. His story stood out for its detail and presentation.
As Thalia shared, “I enjoyed learning about the story of Giacomo Ianello. The detail of his story was fascinating and interactive.”

Another favourite activity was stepping into the shoes of museum curators. Students had the opportunity to create their own mini displays, selecting the migrant stories that resonated most with them and presenting them creatively.
“I loved pretending to be a curator and making our own displays on migrant stories,” said Ivy.
This hands-on, story-rich experience helped deepen understanding in a way no textbook could.
“I enjoyed the hands-on experiences of the migrant stories,” said Claudia. Summing up what many of her classmates felt.
The excursion not only strengthened the girls’ understanding of migration but also encouraged empathy and critical thinking, skills that will serve them well beyond the classroom.
