Exploring the World of Work: Years 11 & 12 Workplace Learning

Breanna Fourie (Year 12) at Balshaw's Florist

For Years 11 and 12 girls embarking on the ACCESS pathway, Workplace Learning presents a challenging yet immensely rewarding opportunity. Through this program, each student selects a profession of interest to delve into and spends ten days immersing themselves in the workforce while their ATAR counterparts sit for exams. This initiative holds significant value for the participating students.

Invaluable Experience

First and foremost, Workplace Learning offers students an invaluable experience of being part of the professional workforce. It takes them beyond the walls of the classroom and places them in real-world scenarios, exposing them to various industries. This hands-on involvement grants them a genuine taste of what it means to be an active member of the workforce, allowing them to develop a deeper appreciation for the expectations and responsibilities associated with their chosen professions.

Professional Standards

Moreover, Workplace Learning serves as a vital platform for students to comprehend and internalise professional standards. The program provides a structured environment where they can observe and learn from experienced professionals, acquiring insights into the norms, ethics, and behaviours expected in the workplace. By aligning their own attitudes and behaviours with these standards, students develop a sense of professionalism and gain a competitive edge as they transition into their future careers.

Learn New & Essential Skills

The acquisition of new and essential skills is another pivotal aspect of Workplace Learning. Students are exposed to a diverse range of tasks and challenges that require them to adapt and acquire new competencies. Whether it’s honing communication skills, mastering time management, or cultivating problem-solving abilities, these experiential learning opportunities empower students with practical skills that are indispensable in the professional world. The hands-on nature of the program allows for a more profound comprehension of these skills, fostering a sense of self-confidence and competence among the participants.

A Look into the Future

Workplace Learning serves as an eye-opening experience for students to explore different career paths and gain clarity on their future aspirations. By immersing themselves in various work environments, students can identify areas they are genuinely passionate about and discover their true calling. Some students may find confirmation that their chosen career aligns with their interests and goals, while others may realise that the path they initially envisioned is not the right fit for them. Regardless of the outcome, this self-discovery process enables students to make informed decisions about their future and empowers them to pursue fulfilling and rewarding careers.

We reached out to some of the girls to hear about their experiences, and they were more than willing to share their transformative journeys.
