From the President – December 2024

Given the recent resignation of our Old Girls’ Association President, Gemma Varone, I would like to start by personally thanking Gemma for her hard-working contribution to our committee. Gemma’s journalistic experience and her affable and approachable personality have made it a pleasure to work with her over the past eight years. I wish you well Gemma, for your wedding day, your marriage, and all other of life’s endeavours. Thank you.

At the last OGA meeting on 4 November, my fellow committee members proposed that I take on the role of interim president until a permanent president is elected at the forthcoming Biennial General Meeting on 17 March 2025. I feel honoured to have been proposed.

Having graduated from Santa Maria in 1974, this year marks 50 years since I graduated from Santa Maria College. This meant I was able to attend my first Golden Girls’ Luncheon on 7 November. A good number of my 1974 class also attended. It was a highly enjoyable occasion. An unbeatable location and view from the Community Room, delicious food and much laughter as we reminisced. The Golden Girls’ Lunch is held annually, and so in 2025, we will welcome the class of 1975 as our newcomers.

I would like to invite our alumni to consider submitting their stories for inclusion in the monthly blog. No matter how brief, whether happy, funny, slightly irreverent, reflective, or appreciative, we would welcome your contribution for inclusion in the blog. The next blog will be produced at the beginning of February 2025. If you would like to include your story or know someone whose story we should share, please email [email protected]

Since its pre-World War II beginnings, Santa Maria College has evolved significantly, embracing both modern facilities, like the new Cultural Centre – currently under construction, and a forward-thinking approach to education. Beyond academics, the College fosters critical thinking and compassion by addressing global issues such as environmental care, social justice, and peacebuilding. This values-driven focus equips students with the knowledge and tools to create meaningful change, inspiring a new generation of leaders.

I have enjoyed the opportunity to continue to develop and strengthen alumni ties, getting to know my fellow committee members and the College employees who are essential in helping our committee function. In this regard, I would like to particularly mention Jennifer Oaten, Principal; Margo Bastow, Director of Community Relations; Chelsea Weaver Foundations & Alumni Officer; and Karen Bickerton, Marketing and Communications Coordinator. The catering staff also deserve a mention for providing such reliably excellent food at all alumni functions. Thank you all.

On that note, I conclude by wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Warmest wishes as you rest and recover from the year. I look forward to playing a part in our alumni activities in 2025.
