Future Ready with Future10

This week, our Year 10 students took part in the highly anticipated Future10 program, a key part of Santa Maria College’s emPOWER initiative. Future10 is designed to equip students with the tools they need to navigate life beyond school, with a particular focus on financial literacy and wellbeing strategies.
Building Skills & Fostering Creativity
Over the three-day program, students participated in various activities to build practical skills, prepare for the future and foster creativity. Students spent a day at Curtin University engaging in a variety of activities that allowed them to explore different courses they might consider in their future studies. They also heard from inspiring guest speakers, including Paris from Purposeful, personal finance journalist Michelle Bowes, and representatives from RAC, who shared valuable advice on financial literacy and wise decision-making.
In addition to the talks, students explored creative and physical outlets in wellbeing sessions, which included a drumming workshop, an energising Konga fitness class, and self-defence lessons. These activities encouraged students to embrace self-expression, build confidence, and develop strategies to manage their wellbeing.
Building Confidence and Independence
Peter Hanbidge, Dean of Students – Year 10, highlighted the importance of this program, saying:
“The Future10 project aims to build confidence and independence among our Year 10 students. They will be better equipped to take control of their financial futures by understanding budgeting, saving, investing, and credit management. This empowerment extends beyond personal finance, fostering leadership skills and encouraging girls to pursue careers in finance and business.”
Peter also noted the program’s role in promoting economic equality, “Financial literacy is a key component of economic equality. The Future10 program promotes inclusivity by providing all participants with the same opportunities to learn and grow. This initiative helps to level the playing field, giving girls the tools they need to succeed in a world where financial acumen is increasingly important.”

Preparing for the Future
Future10 offers students a unique mix of practical learning, creative expression, and self-reflection, ensuring they leave the program better prepared for the challenges and opportunities of their senior years.
By equipping students with essential life skills and empowering them to take charge of their futures, Future10 is helping our Year 10 girls become confident, capable young women ready to thrive in a changing world.
Student Highlights
“‘Santopoly’ was a really fun session that taught us strong financial lessons and provided us with the enjoyment of playing Monopoly with our friends. It taught me all about saving and spending money and how quickly it can disappear. I think this session was really important to us as young women in helping us learn about money in ‘real-life’ situations.” Siyana
“I really enjoyed ‘To Debt or Not to Debt’, which was led by various mathematics teachers who taught us how to make wise financial decisions. I also enjoyed learning about the effects of interest rates in terms of loans and savings and calculating potential purchases, like a future car, using either my savings or taking out a loan.” Chloe
