Rain and cold didn’t stop our intrepid Year 12 Outdoor Education students enjoying the Bushwalking Expedition held last week over two days.

The girls started their adventure in Kalamunda, then walked the Bibbulman Track to Mundaring, after camping at the Ball Creek campsite.

Before heading off on the expedition, during class, the girls planned their routes, navigational strategies, risk assessment and management. They looked at search patterns and leadership strategies, learnt how to forecast the weather and researched environmental issues. In pairs, the girls each led a section of the walk using these life skills they’d learnt in class.

We asked two of the girls who attended the camp about their experience.

What was the best part of the camp?
The best part about the camp was spending time with all the girls when cooking a communal dinner. It was the last time we were going to be cooking a camp meal as a group, so we made it a fun and happy moment.”

What was the funniest moment?
The funniest moment was when my friend was walking up the steep stairs and had to get on her hands and knees to climb up them.

What challenges did you face?
A challenge I faced was having to walk in cold conditions, even though I had many layers on, I still felt the cool breeze.

What did you learn?
I learnt that even in rain and cold conditions and walking up steep hills you can still make fun out of it because it pushes and motivates you.

What was the best part of the camp?
After a long day of walking, the best part was probably hopping on the bus home!

What was the funniest moment?
Around the campfire, reminiscing on all our other camps and experiences that we’ve shared.

What challenges did you face?
The rain, in general.

What did you learn?
I learnt that I am a very fast walker, and not everyone likes to walk fast!
