Holding Onto Hope – Jennifer Oaten

Life isn’t always smooth sailing. The weight of the world can feel heavier than ever for young people today, who are exposed to global crises, personal pressures, and an overwhelming stream of information. Without hope, it’s easy for anxiety to creep in. But hope is what lifts us, offering the belief that things can get better and providing the resilience needed to face life’s inevitable challenges.
What is Hope?
Hope isn’t just wishful thinking. It’s the quiet voice that says, “Try again tomorrow.” It’s the belief that even when things are tough, there’s potential for change, for improvement, for light at the end of the tunnel. Hope motivates action; it’s what drives us to work for a better future, to reach out to others, and to keep going, even when the path isn’t clear.
Why Does Hope Matter?
When hope fades, it can feel like we are stuck with no way out. Anxiety, doubt, and fear thrive in its absence. But when hope is present, it fuels resilience. It helps students view challenges, like a tough grade or friendship issue, as opportunities for growth rather than failures. This perspective encourages them to believe that even when things don’t go to plan, new possibilities and valuable lessons can emerge, reinforcing the importance of perseverance without repeating later points.

Where Can We Find Hope?
Hope can be found in everyday experiences, like a smile from a friend, a kind word, or accomplishing something you thought was beyond reach. For our students, hope often shines through in how they support one another, whether it’s offering encouragement before a test or lending a hand to someone struggling. Service to others is another powerful source of hope, offering a chance to make a difference while renewing our own sense of purpose. These meaningful connections and acts of kindness complement the small steps we can take to build hope in our lives.
Young children, with their wonder and optimism, are living signs of hope. Their curiosity and belief that anything is possible remind us of the joy in simple things. At Santa Maria College, we see this every day in students who dream big, care deeply and believe they can change the world.
How Do We Build Hope?
Hope isn’t something you either have or don’t have; it can be nurtured and strengthened. Here are a few small steps to foster hope:
- Celebrate Small Wins: Recognising even the tiniest achievements can build momentum and positivity.
- Look for the Good: Every day, there’s something to be grateful for. Shifting focus to what’s going right, even in hard times, can lift spirits.
- Support Each Other: Connection brings hope. Whether you’re lending a listening ear or encouraging a friend, you’re spreading hope.
- Take Action: When things feel overwhelming, doing something, no matter how small, can restore a sense of control and optimism.

Hope in Our Community
In this Jubilee Year of Hope, we’re invited to reflect on how hope shapes our lives and work. For our students, hope means believing in their potential and the future they are working towards. For parents, it’s trusting that the small lessons and values instilled today will bear fruit tomorrow. For teachers and staff, it’s about seeing beyond daily challenges to the growth and progress happening in front of us.
Setbacks are a natural part of life, but they don’t define us. They offer moments to reflect, adjust, and keep moving forward. Hope gives us the strength to embrace these challenges with a fresh perspective and renewed determination.
Final Reflection
As we journey through this Jubilee Year of Hope, celebrated globally under the theme of ‘Pilgrims of Hope’, we are called to reflect on how hope guides us through life’s challenges and invites us to walk forward with trust, compassion, and optimism. Compassion, our Mercy value focus this year, beautifully complements the theme of hope by reminding us that acts of kindness and understanding can uplift both others and ourselves.
Being a pilgrim of hope means more than taking small steps; it’s about embracing the journey with purpose and openness to growth. As we reflect on this theme, may we find new ways to inspire, connect, and act with courage.
