Hope in Action: What the Saints Teach Us Today
Each year on 1 November, we celebrate All Saints Day. On this feast day we honour all who have lived lives of extraordinary faith and service and are role models to us, showing us what it means to live authentically in God’s likeness.
This year, All Saints Day takes on an extra meaning because the Church is also celebrating the Jubilee Year of Hope. The Jubilee Year is a time of forgiveness, mercy, renewal and celebration. It also invites us to share in Jesus’ mission to create a world of justice, peace and love. Â
So, as we honour the saints today, we also recognise how their stories align with this wider call in the Jubilee Year to be pilgrims of hope. The saints lived out their faith, through challenge and change, through caring and building communities. In a similar way, the Jubilee invites each of us to step forward with hope, to offer kindness, to reach out to those who need it.
Why this Connection Matters
On All Saints Day, we remember those who lived lives of radical faith, love and service. The Jubilee Year reminds us that our Christian journey is always ongoing – a pilgrimage of hope, moving from what is, toward what could be. Together, they encourage us to ask: How can I, like the saints, be a pilgrim of hope in my everyday life?
For our community at Santa Maria College, this means offering our time, our gifts and our compassion in meaningful ways, supporting one another, uplifting each other, and walking together as a community of hope.
A Prayer for All Saints Day
Everlasting God,
You made all people in your image and likeness to share eternal light with you.
Some have lived so authentically to your will that they are recognised as Saints.
May we honour them and respect their holiness, especially today, and call on their witness to help guide us too.
Holy God,
You have gifted us with the potential to grow every day, more and more, into your image and likeness.
May the example of the Saints encourage us to never give up, to always keep our hearts loving and kind.
We pray through Jesus.
Amen
