IGSSA Athletics 2024 – A Celebration of our Depth
Each year, when we announce our teams for the swimming, cross country and athletics squads, we are always asked, “Are reserves required to train?” Our answer is always a resounding yes. We can’t remember an IGSSA event where reserves who have been training consistently haven’t worked their way into the team, or reserves are called upon at the last minute.
We remind the girls that every member of our team is vital to our success. This was very much the case on Tuesday at the IGSSA Athletics carnival.
From the original team we selected after our interhouse event in July to the team who competed on the day – we had 58 changes. Across 130 events, this is a significant amount. These changes are a combination of our original reserves training hard and working their way into an event or athletes stepping up on the day to cover athletes who are ill or have an injury
With many of these changes occurring in the final days of our preparation, we were incredibly excited to finish a competitive 5th place at the end of the event. This is a testament to the wonderful depth of our athletics squad, the commitment these girls have made to the season and the enthusiasm with which they approach the season.Â
We were so proud and impressed by the attitude of all athletes. Those who were asked to step up did so with such positivity and enthusiasm. We also had many who had to drop their preferred events to fill others, and once again, these athletes did this so willingly for the team.
We had some exceptional performances throughout the day, with a special shout-out to our throwers, who all finished in the top four for their events. Many of our athletes achieved personal bests along with these incredible results.
The Santa Maria spirit was evident on the sidelines as well with our athletes making sure all competitors were supported at their event sites and on the track.
We are incredibly proud of our 2024 Athletics team, their ability, commitment and support of their team made them a wonderful group of young women to be around.
