IGSSA Swimming Carnival 2023

Santa Maria has had another fantastic year in the pool, culminating in the annual IGSSA Swimming Carnival. Contrary to previous years, this year’s carnival was held as a daytime event at HBF Stadium.

After many early mornings and intense training sessions, which began in Term 4 last year, the squad were excited to swim and compete for the 2023 Champion School in Swimming.

Santa Maria placed a respectable fourth overall. This year, the competition was extremely tight. Only three points separated second and third place, and two points were the difference between fourth and fifth.

  1. St Hilda’s (1075)
  2. Iona Presentation College (1006)
  3. St Mary’s (1003)
  4. Santa Maria College (916.5)
  5. Methodist Ladies’ College (914.5)
  6. Penrhos College (825)
  7. Perth College (816)
  8. Presbyterian Ladies’ College (800.5)

This made for an exciting competition involving lots of cheering, encouragement, and applause for our girls! You could certainly feel the Santa Spirit radiating through the stadium.

A special shout-out must go to our Year 11 Medley relay team, who took home a win for Santa Maria!

Ava Forrest, Ava Donovan, Bianca Monaco and Alyssa Monaco all had an incredible day in their individual events and made magic happen together in this Medley. It was amazing to watch and an achievement we hope they are proud of.

The Year 11 cohort also had a remarkable day overall and only just missed out on winning their year group pennant by two points!

All other year group placings are as follows:

Year 7 – 7th
Year 8 – 7th
Year 9 – 5th
Year 10 – 6th
Year 11 – 2nd
Year 12 – 3rd

We must also congratulate our Year 7 students, who competed in their first-ever IGSSA Swimming Carnival. The girls shook off their nerves to showcase their talents and received terrific results. They represented the College beautifully.

Our Year 12 leaders also must not go unnoticed, who provided unwavering support to our swim squad on the day and throughout the season.

A massive thank you goes to our PE Department and dedicated coaches, who, without, none of this would be possible. Our coaches are expert swimmers and do an incredible job teaching our swimmers the true meaning of team spirit.

Here’s to next year’s IGSSA Swimming Carnival!
