Inaugural Health & Medical Pathways Forum
Santa Maria College held its inaugural Health and Medical Pathways Forum for interested Years 10, 11 and 12 students and their parents. The popularity of the forum prompted organisers to move to a larger venue at the College.
Representatives from Curtin University, Edith Cowan University, Murdoch University, the University of Notre Dame and the University of Western Australia all took turns presenting valuable information stemming from their respective health and medicine faculties. This was followed by an expo where the representatives were able to provide tailored advice to students and parents from their respective booths.
Some of the talking points that were covered included:
- direct and indirect entry options into medicine
- dentistry and other highly competitive health related courses
- the importance of deciding on second options
- pre-requisite learning entry requirements
- course switch considerations
- various approaches to access health related courses via an ATAR or general/vocational pathway
The feedback from both students and parents was overwhelmingly positive. One student commented that the forum “provided clarity on how to access university courses in health and medicine”. The forum had an inspiring effect on another student when she declared “I’m actually really excited to go to university and study”. For many students, the information reaffirmed their current subject choices and the performance levels they need to attain to meet specific entry requirements.
Santa Maria is one of just a limited number of schools choosing to offer a career seminar within a specific industry context. There may be future plans to offer similar forums that represent various other industry and career sectors.
