Interhouse Drama: Be Anything You Want

Interhouse Drama: Be Anything You Want

It’s been a busy two weeks for the Performing Arts Department, with both the Senior School and Middle School Interhouse Drama Playoffs happening. After workshops in improvisation with professional performer, director, and producer Libby Klysz, our students got to show off their skills in the interhouse competition.

Interhouse Drama is an exciting and entertaining competition between the Houses, where a team of performers participate in drama improvisation games in front of an invited audience. The three judges award points for entertainment, storytelling, and skills including the use of space and teamwork.

I have participated in House Drama since I was in Year 8 and have enjoyed it every single year. It is one night where performers from all Houses get together, support each other, and have fun!

Improvisation is daunting for some. It takes a great deal of courage to stand in front of an audience, take an idea, and perform without any preparation. In my experience, it can be hard to come up with an interesting idea to contribute to the storyline or to create a plot twist that makes it funnier for the audience.

Sometimes standing aside while your teammates carry out the improvisation can be more effective than creating a complex but chaotic scene. But it can be hard to resist the temptation to get involved.

Participating in House Drama every year has helped me develop my confidence. I have learned to listen to others and accept ideas no matter how crazy they are! It has also prepared me for doing improvisation tasks in ATAR Drama practical exams.

I’d like to thank all the girls who took part in the competition this year and the Performing Arts staff for helping to run the show. The results will be announced at the final school assembly of 2020. It will be so exciting to see who wins!

Interhouse Drama is always a great experience, it’s a time where you can be anything you want and work together as a team to make everyone laugh. There’s always something new every year, and it really helps people to think on the spot and find themselves. Cosima Biagioni, Year 11.5
