Interpreting the Holy Spirit Through Art

This term, our Year 5 students embraced a beautiful challenge, bringing their understanding of the Holy Spirit to life through art. What resulted was a heartfelt exhibition of colour, creativity and spiritual reflection that transformed their classrooms into sacred galleries.
Each student was invited to create an artwork at home that expressed what the Holy Spirit means to them. Back at school, they wrote personal reflections to explain their thinking and how the Holy Spirit helps guide them to be their best selves.

The artworks ranged from stained glass-inspired pieces to layered sculptures and vibrant mobiles. What made each piece truly special was the story behind it. The students spoke openly and thoughtfully about faith, symbolism and how the Holy Spirit moves in their lives.
Teacher Angela Perry shared her admiration, saying,
“It’s inspiring to see how each student interprets the Holy Spirit in their own way. Some students demonstrated a link in their rationale between our Mercy Values and the Fruits of the Holy Spirit.”

Here is what some of our young artists had to say about their creations:
Penelope (5.2), who titled her piece The Light is Brighter and Stronger, said she enjoyed the project because she likes using artistic elements to express herself.
Zara (5.3) created a powerful mixed-media artwork called Right Hand of Strength.
“The main part was the right hand with the values coming out of the fingers. The right hand represents the Holy Spirit. I used a variety of colours on black card. The black was the enemies, and the colours were positivity and love shown by the Holy Spirit. I even used some olive leaves from the tree down the road, to represent the everlasting love of the Holy Spirit.”
In 5.4, Azalea named her piece Together.
“I learnt that together you can do amazing things, and if you put effort into what you do, the Holy Spirit will help and guide you through it. It gives you strength to do amazing things and make the right choices.”
Eva (5.5) chose the title Holy Spirit Burning Brightly for her work.
“I wrote words that represent the Holy Spirit on my candle. I hope that people would read the words and think about those words and how they can be better people.”
