Just Another Science Period

Science is always abuzz with lots happening around the labs and classrooms, even in Period 6 on a Friday afternoon.

If you headed into the Consilii Centre last Friday afternoon, you would have seen Year 9 Marine Science classes dissecting blue swimmer crabs to explore the external anatomy and physical adaptations to their environment. It allowed the girls to also see the internal structures, such as the gills. In classes this week, they will compare these crustaceans with fish and see how the gills differ.

Year 11 Biology classes were dissecting fish to extract the fish otoliths, thus allowing students to see if they were able to use these otoliths to determine the approximate age of fish.

The Year 10 Human Biology class dissected hearts, again to develop a better understanding of how the heart works.

Year 10 students Charlotte Robinson and Lauren De Smet said of the heart dissections, “We found this experience helpful as it provided us with a better understanding of this topic. Human biology is a rewarding class as we are able to understand more about how our body functions. We found it interesting to see the different parts of the heart and how it looks outside of the body. We also found it fascinating that this organ is the size of a fist and is able to keep us alive, which is extraordinary to believe”.

Thank you to the Science technicians, without them this would not be possible.
