Kaitlin Attends the Healthy Rivers Forum

At Santa Maria College, the health of the Swan River holds special significance. Located so close to its banks, our community understands the vital role this river plays in our environment and lifestyle. That’s why our Eco Sisters program is deeply committed to its preservation, teaching students the importance of environmental stewardship. This commitment was on full display last weekend when Jo Priest, our Eco Sisters Coordinator, and one of our enthusiastic members, Kaitlin (Year 9), attended the Healthy Rivers Forum, organised by local Member of Parliament Lisa O’Malley.
The forum gathered various stakeholders dedicated to the preservation of the Swan Canning River and estuary. It offered a platform for environmental groups, government officials, and community members to come together, share knowledge, and inspire action. Kaitlin, eagerly registered for the event, and her experience was one that left a lasting impression.
Kaitlin’s Reflection on the Day
Kaitlin’s reflection captures the essence of the event beautifully. The forum opened with a moving Welcome to Country ceremony, setting the tone for a day filled with compassion and respect for the land and its people. Lisa O’Malley, MLA for Bicton, introduced the speakers, including the Honourable Reece Whitby, Minister for the Environment.
The talks were nothing short of inspiring. Key topics included the protection of migratory birds, the role of bird watching in promoting mental wellbeing, and innovative projects such as the creation of reefs to support marine life. Kaitlin and Jo left the forum buzzing with ideas for future Eco Sisters projects. Meeting leaders from organisations like Conserve WA, The Swan River Trust, and Murdoch University’s Environment Management Group gave them fresh insights and contacts that will undoubtedly fuel the program’s upcoming initiatives.
A Day to Remember
One of the highlights for Kaitlin was meeting Lisa O’Malley and having a photo taken with all the guest speakers – a moment she’ll surely treasure. “It was an amazing experience and definitely something to remember!” Kaitlin shared, reflecting the enthusiasm and pride she felt in representing Santa Maria College’s Eco Sisters at such an important event.
Looking Ahead
We are so proud of our Eco Sisters, who continually take steps towards creating a sustainable future. With new connections and a wealth of ideas gathered from the Healthy Rivers Forum, we’re excited to see how our students will channel this inspiration into action, helping to preserve our precious environment for generations to come.
