Kristy (1994): Publicist for Paramount and Network 10
Having been inspired by her love for TV, film and theatre, Kristy Hall Harper (Class of 1994) has held a range of jobs in the media industry and is currently a Senior Publicist at Paramount and Network 10.Â
We spoke to Kristy to hear what she’s been up to since her time at Santa Maria and learn more about her career.
What have you been up to since leaving Santa Maria?
I left Santa many years ago now, so life has been a fun, full and happy adventure. I have travelled the world, worked in some amazing jobs, met many interesting and lovely people, but my biggest joy has been becoming a mother to my three wonderful girls.
How did you become a publicist? Was it something you had an interest in or came across?
After I left Santa I started studying public relations. While studying I managed to secure one of my first jobs at The Sunday Times and it all began from there. Initially my role was in marketing and promotions but then moved into publicity from working in the media industry. One job led to another and I found something I love to do. I’ve always loved film, TV and theatre, so it was definitely an interest for me.Â
What does a normal day look like for you?
My days can vary a lot from one day to the next. That is why I enjoy it so much! I always start my day by reading the newspapers and online sites for any articles that reference Paramount and Network 10 programs and talent, but also to keep up with what else is going on in the world. I will check our ratings from the night before to see how our shows have performed and then this is where my day will shift – I can be working on anything from pitching interviews, attending radio interviews, managing and meeting cast, being on set, writing media alerts and organising photoshoots or events. Recently I was working in Africa for I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! so that was a very interesting way to spend my work days.Â
What is your favourite part of your job?
The people (the team I work with are the best), the variety and I love being a part of how programs are brought to life. It still amazes me how it all comes together and the huge team working very hard behind the scenes to bring a show to our TV screens and devices.Â
When you were at the College, was there anyone or any programs that had a significant impact on you? If so, how does this still effect you now?
Absolutely. Drama was always my favourite subject and Hal Davies was my favourite teacher. His productions, teaching and support always encouraged me to follow my interests in the industry which I now find myself working in.Â
What do you like to do outside of work, in your downtime?
I love to spend time with friends and travel with my family – even if it’s just weekenders. Travel makes my soul happy. And the beach. I’m an ocean girl and always love a swim at the beautiful Leighton Beach as way to start or finish my day if I can squeeze it in. Nothing else like it.
