Leadership in Action – GRIP Leadership Conference

Leadership is not just about having a title – it is about stepping up, making a difference, and inspiring others to do the same. That is exactly what our Year 10 and Year 6 student leaders discovered at the GRIP Leadership Conference recently. The GRIP Leadership Conference focuses on helping students build the skills needed for school leadership, where they pick up useful tips they can start using straight away.

It was a day packed with hands-on learning, thought-provoking discussions, and real-world leadership skills they can apply right away.

Learning to Lead with Purpose

From the moment they arrived at the Perth Exhibition Centre, our students were immersed in an energetic and engaging atmosphere. The conference challenged them to think about what leadership really means – not just in theory, but in action. They explored their personal leadership styles, tackled challenges as a team, and gained practical strategies to help them lead with confidence, kindness, and integrity.

One of the most powerful aspects of the day was how closely the workshops aligned with our Mercy values of Hospitality, Compassion, Justice, Service, and Excellence. From building a positive team culture to turning ideas into action, every session reinforced what we stand for.

Key Takeaways From the Day

The students took part in interactive workshops covering topics like:

  • Leading with Integrity – Why honesty and responsibility matter in leadership.
  • Turning Ideas into Action – Practical ways to create real change.
  • Building a Team Culture – The power of teamwork and clear communication.
  • Handling Leadership Challenges – Overcoming obstacles with confidence.

There was no sitting back and listening all day – our students were actively involved, sharing their thoughts, solving problems, and even role-playing real leadership situations. The day wrapped up with a personal reflection session, where each student set leadership goals to work towards this year.

A Big Thank You

A huge shoutout to the teachers who attended this conference. Your support helped make this experience even more valuable, and we are so grateful for your commitment to fostering leadership at Santa Maria College.

The Journey Continues

This conference was just the beginning. Our student leaders have come away feeling inspired, empowered, and ready to step up in their roles. Whether it is leading initiatives at school, supporting their peers, or making a difference in the wider community, they now have the confidence and skills to make it happen. We cannot wait to see them put their leadership into action!
