Leading the Way in AI Literacy

Librarian guiding students through AI referencing using the SHIFT framework.

Rather than shying away from artificial intelligence, Santa Maria College’s Library team is embracing AI literacy, ensuring students develop the skills to question, evaluate, and use AI responsibly.

In an era of information overload, it is easy to assume that a quick Google search or an AI-generated response provides accurate and reliable information. That is why our Library staff have long guided students in evaluating online sources using the SIFT framework, teaching them to assess authenticity, recognise bias, and verify claims. Now, they have introduced SHIFT, a research strategy designed specifically for AI-generated content.

Teaching Students to Question AI

The H in SHIFT stands for hallucination, a well-documented issue where AI fabricates information. Our students learn that AI does not always get it right, so fact-checking is essential. A real-world example? A real estate company once used AI to generate property descriptions, only to find the system ‘helpfully’ added swimming pools to homes that did not have them!

To prevent these kinds of errors, our students are taught to:

  • Critically evaluate AI-generated content and verify facts
  • Double-check information that seems too good to be true
  • Reference AI sources correctly and ethically

AI Literacy for Life

With unlimited information at their fingertips, students need the skills to navigate not just their schoolwork but the broader digital world. Our Library team is passionate about empowering our students to be critical thinkers who use technology thoughtfully and ethically.

As leaders in AI literacy, Amanda Crossley, Amy Hollingsworth and Khrystal Trimble are sharing their SHIFT framework with schools across Australia, ensuring more students learn to engage with AI responsibly.

By fostering innovation, academic excellence, and ethical learning, we are preparing students for a future in which AI is a tool, not a replacement for critical thinking.
