Lights, Camera, Opportunity – Students Step Onto the Set

There was a real buzz across the College recently as cameras rolled in preparation of the launch of our Take Your Seat campaign and the opening of our new Cultural Centre next term.

With past student Cassie Silver (Class of 2006) and her talented crew from Silver Linings & Co on site, our campus transformed into a working film set. While the opening of the Centre itself is an exciting milestone for the College, what made the day truly special was the opportunity it created for our students.

It was a hands-on, real-world learning experience for our girls.

A Front-Row Seat to the Industry

Students from Music, Dance and Drama stepped confidently into the spotlight, bringing energy, creativity and professionalism to every scene. Alongside them, a dedicated team of students worked behind the scenes as ‘runners’, supporting the crew and gaining insight into the many moving parts that make a production successful.

Students were able to see firsthand just how much coordination and collaboration goes into producing a professional campaign.

Year 10 Drama student Lilly shared her excitement about being involved:

“I’m so grateful to have been part of the new cultural centre video. It was such an amazing opportunity and an unforgettable experience.”

For Year 12 student Taylor, who is currently studying a Certificate III in Film & Television at TAFE, the experience was particularly meaningful.

“What I found the most interesting was the way everything worked. It was a great experience to see how everything ran on a set, seeing the camera work and how the lighting helped. It made me realise how much goes on behind the scenes. Watching it all happen in real life helped me understand the industry more and showed me how what I’m learning in my Cert III connects to a real set. It made me more interested in working in this industry in the future.”

Opportunities like this bridge the gap between classroom learning and industry practice. For students considering creative pathways, whether in performance, production, media or beyond, the day offered invaluable insight and inspiration.

The new Cultural Centre, a space designed to nurture talent and showcase the performing arts at Santa Maria College. Who better than our students to bring the Take Your Seat campaign to life, sharing their talent and spirit in the campaign video.

Year 11 Music student, Adayna, who is one of the students featured in the video, said it was a great experience.

“It’s a privilege to be involved in showcasing the new cultural centre to the school and wider community. I’m glad to be able to present the work that we do in music to inspire others to get involved with the music community!”

Working alongside experienced professionals such as Cassie and her crew allowed students to observe industry standards, ask questions and experience the pace and professionalism of a real production environment. It reinforced the importance of teamwork, communication and creative problem-solving, skills that extend far beyond the stage or screen.

As we prepare to unveil our Take Your Seat campaign, we are incredibly proud of the way our students embraced this opportunity. Their enthusiasm, maturity and willingness to step outside their comfort zones reflect exactly what our new Cultural Centre is all about – confidence, creativity and courage.

We look forward to sharing the video and Take Your Seat campaign soon.
