Maddison Hughes – ‘Gathered Table’ Exhibition

Some of life’s best moments happen around the table. Whether it is a quick morning coffee with a friend, a loud family dinner, or a quiet glass of wine at the end of a long day, these simple gatherings are where connections are made.

One of Santa Maria College’s newest staff members, Maddison Hughes, understands this deeply. Maddison is not just a Careers and Humanities & Social Sciences Teacher but a talented artist. Her latest exhibition, Gathered Table, is now on display at Madalena’s Bar in South Fremantle as part of their Artist Residency program.

The collection celebrates the everyday. It captures the warmth of shared meals, the beauty in imperfect moments, and the way ordinary objects become part of our stories. Originally showcased at Peacetree Wines in Cowaramup, Maddison has since added new pieces, each inviting viewers to reflect on their own experiences.

When did you first realise that art was something you were passionate about?

I was always drawing and painting growing up. I’ve always been drawn to it and can never quite shake the pull to pick up a paintbrush. I studied ATAR Visual Art and had an incredible teacher who supported both my practice and appreciation for art history. Her influence deepened my appreciation of all forms of art. I could easily spend hours in galleries or exhibitions of any kind!

What was the first piece of art you created?

I can’t pinpoint my first artwork, but reflecting on this, I realise how much my style is slowly evolving. I started out painting intricate and meticulous works with simplistic colour palettes, which were often mistaken as prints. Now, I embrace a more carefree approach, applying various layers without worrying about making ‘mistakes’ along the way. Sometimes, I still feel there is a perception held that artists should be recognised for a style, which I would disagree with. Innately, we all evolve and change as individuals, so of course, our style is going to evolve too.

Was there a particular person or experience that inspired you to start painting?

There wasn’t a single defining moment – just an ongoing curiosity and love for creativity. However, my confidence grew when I was invited to exhibit at Peacetree Wines in Cowaramup in 2023 while living in the South West. I credit that experience with having led me to say yes to opportunities and be proactive in putting myself out there.

How does it feel to see your artwork in an exhibition?

It feels surreal! Exhibiting has helped me connect with the Fremantle artist community and build support networks. My current exhibition, Gathered Table at Madalena Bar, has been especially meaningful since I moved back to Perth, as it’s been wonderful to share it with friends and family.

What’s next for you? Do you have any future projects or goals in mind?

I have immense respect for abstract artists. I find this style of painting very difficult, but I want to explore it more. At the moment, I am more concerned about the process of painting rather than trying to foresee the outcome, which aligns with abstract painting. I love both the challenge and freedom of this style, and it gives me the ability to combine all the things I love – colour, texture, and movement.

The exhibition will be up for the next month, offering the perfect excuse to visit Madalena’s, soak in the atmosphere, and reflect.

Well done Maddison. This is such an incredible achievement.
