Making Memories – Year 7 Silent Disco
Santa Maria College and Aquinas College came together to host an unforgettable Year 7 Silent Disco last Friday night. This vibrant event saw nearly 400 excited students dancing the night away, creating memories and forging new friendships. With the help of Year 10 leaders, the night was a perfect blend of music, fun, and friendship.
It’s Not Just About Dancing
The Silent Disco was not just about dancing; it was a fantastic opportunity for our Year 7 students to create friendships and develop social skills. As each student donned a headset, they could tune into one of three music channels, easily identifiable by the colour lighting up on their headsets. This innovative setup encouraged interaction and excitement as students switched channels and danced together.
Julie Schubert, the Year 7 Dean, highlighted a magical moment when the dance floor turned into a sea of red lights as all students switched to the same channel and loudly sang together to the one song. She said, “It looked like they were all having a lot of fun!”
Building Community and Belonging
This event marked the first social gathering together for the Year 7 students from both schools, fostering a sense of community and belonging. Julie Schubert observed, “It was great to see the Year 7s from each school meeting at their first social together and making new friends and connections throughout the evening. The start of friendships that will continue to develop over their years right through to Year 12.”
Student Voices: The Heart of the Night
The students themselves had glowing reviews of the event. Isla shared, “The Silent Disco was one of the highlights of the year! From the good music and funny dance moves to the new and friendly people I met, the experience was the best.”
Isabelle echoed this sentiment, stating, “The Silent Disco was such a lively and vibrant night. It was a perfect opportunity to get to know new people and hang out with friends.”
Poppy reflected on the broader impact, saying, “I, and I know many other people enjoyed the Year 7 social. It was a great way to get to know each other better and meet some boys from Aquinas who could be our future friends. Overall, the Year 7 social was an amazing, fun event, and I am happy and excited for all the years below us to experience this fun, exciting night.”
The Year 7 Silent Disco was a resounding success, bringing together students from Santa Maria College and Aquinas College in an evening filled with laughter, music, and new connections. Events like these are important in fostering community, and creating lasting memories. We look forward to many more such events that not only entertain but also enrich our students’ social and personal development.
