May, The Month of Mary

After celebrating Mother’s Day last Sunday, our reflection on mothers and the role they play in our lives, remains at the forefront of our mind.

Mothers are traditionally the first educators in our faith. It is from our mothers and grandmothers that we learnt how to pray. One of the beautiful prayers many of us would have recited with our mothers and grandmothers is the Rosary.

Rosary means ‘a garland of roses’. The rhythm of the prayers, coupled with the fact that many of us have been reciting them since childhood, makes the rosary a familiar touchstone in a world that often feels unfamiliar and chaotic.

Catholics know the rosary is the most powerful recitation we can make to Our Lady when we desire a miracle or some other grace from God.

May, the Month of Mary

May is one of the months dedicated to Our Lady.

This week, on 13 May, the Church commemorates the appearance of Our Lady to three shepherd children at Fatima in Portugal.

Fatima is one of the most important Catholic shrines in the world dedicated to Our Lady. It was here that Mary appeared to Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta and asked them to pray the Rosary every day.

Mary requested we devote ourselves to her Immaculate Heart and promised that through her prayers, we will be led to God. Mary also promised all who pray the rosary that “Whatever you ask in the Rosary will be granted”.

Without taking time out to pray, it’s difficult to discover the presence of God in our lives and reflect on all our blessings. When we struggle to remain faithful, let us seek refuge in the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and through her powerful intercession, may she lead us to God
