Meet Chris Dawson, Property Manager at Santa Maria College

How long have you been working at Santa Maria College?
I have been working at Santa Maria College for 14 years this October.

Where were you and what were you doing before you came to Santa Maria College?
Prior to that, I was Property Manager at Iona College for four years where I had worked with Anne Pitos.  When Anne came to Santa Maria College as Principal, she encouraged me to apply for the job here when it became vacant.

You are the College Property Manager what does your job entail?
My role as Property Manager is wide-ranging.  First and foremost is management and direction of the grounds and maintenance team in making sure that the College buildings and grounds are presented in an attractive and safe condition for students, staff, parents and the general public.

Secondly, is to arrange and coordinate the support services required by the College community for the many education, sporting and social events conducted by the College.

Thirdly, I am responsible for the general security of the campus buildings, grounds and equipment. This includes employing electronic monitoring and physical security guard services from day to day, as well as special requirements for events etc.

Overseeing compliance throughout the College in conjunction with Kate Jenkin is another major area of work for me.

Finally, I have had, and continue to have, a major role in assisting with project management of the new buildings and facilities we have built since 2009.  This involves liaison and discussion with architects, consultants, builders, contractors, authorities and management & staff

What is your favourite part of your job?
I have to say the aspect of my job that I most enjoy is the project management role.  To be involved in a project from the initial concept discussions, right through the design and building phase to the final official opening, gives me a great sense of achievement and a feeling that I have made a useful contribution to the development of the College

What is one of your most memorable experiences while on the job?
One of my most memorable experiences was the 2016 staff Christmas party where the grounds and maintenance team took the lead role and I acted as Father Christmas.  It was a fun day.

What is your favourite hobby?
My favourite hobby is flying. I used to have a private pilot licence, but gave it up a couple of years ago. However, I still pursue a strong interest in the activities of the Royal Aero Club. I also love reading and travel.  In my life, I have been fortunate to travel to many parts of the world both for employment and pleasure.
